What changed
Four things changed.
Being found used to mean ranking. Now it means being the page the answer uses, and the answer chooses differently.
People stop at the answer.
−39.8%
Where AI Overviews appeared, they cut outbound organic clicks by 39.8% in a randomized field experiment, "without improving the user experience."
The answer is not the results.
Under 1 in 5
Fewer than one in five sources appear in both the AI Overview and the search results under it, across 11,500 queries.
The answer favors pages that are kept up.
75%
of the pages ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity cite were updated in the last year.
Google rates unmaintained pages low.
Low
"Unmaintained and inaccurate/misleading content is a reason for a low Page Quality rating."
The answer uses pages that are kept up, wherever they rank, and changing the date doesn't count. So every page has to hold up, all the time.
The old way
What people do now, and where it stops working.
A rank tracker says where a page sits in the results. The answer above the results is mostly other pages, so a good position no longer means being seen.
The answers favor pages that are kept up, not new ones. Changing the date without changing the page does not count: Google asks site owners whether they do it, and answers its own question with "No."
A crawler finds the title that is too short. It cannot tell you what the title should say, or whether what the page says still holds up, which is what Google rates.
A sample of pages, a few times a year. Google ran eight core updates from August 2024 to May 2026, and each one judges the whole site again.
How probeo does it
Every page, kept up. Not just the ones someone remembers.
Probeo reads every page the way Google and the AI answers do, continuously. When a page stops holding up, you see which one, why, and what it should say instead.
- Every page, continuously
Not a sample a few times a year. Every page, ordered by what it is worth, because Google judges the whole site again with every core update.
- Checked the way the answer checks
Whether the page answers its question and whether what it says still holds up, graded against Google's own rater guidelines. Not where it ranks.
- What to change, not just what is wrong
Not "title too short". What the page should say instead, and why.
- Kept up for real
Content Production rewrites the facts, not the date, then measures what happens after. Publishing stays with you.

Cited in AI Overviews twice as often. On average, customers' cited AI Overview impressions doubled the month after they started with probeo.
Each of the three is measured against its own month before, from Search Console's generative AI appearance report.
The month before probeo against the month after. Three customers, each against its own before.

One customer, all search, the same calendar weeks in 2025 and 2026.
Last year click-through held between 0.7% and 0.9% across these weeks. This year it ran between 1.5% and 2.5%, with the dip after the rewrite, when more searches showed the pages than clicked them.
Search Console, weeks starting May 18 to August 24.
Without probeo, we'd still be looking for consultants to give us this information.
