How does probeo check a page's canonical identity?

A page’s identity is what its URL, title, main heading and section headings together say it is about. When they agree, a reader or a search engine can tell what the page is from any one of them. When they drift apart, the page says several things at once, and nothing on it looks broken.

What probeo checks

Probeo records three readings for each page it analyzes. Each comes with a reason that cites what is visible on the page.

  • Canonical identity: whether the URL, title, main heading and section headings describe the same thing. The answer is true, partial or false.
  • Title, description and heading alignment: whether the title, meta description and main heading set the same expectation.
  • Call-to-action alignment: whether the page’s calls to action fit what the page says it is.

How probeo checks it

A language model first extracts a structured model of the page’s visible content: its title, meta description, main heading, sections, FAQ and calls to action. A second reading takes that model with the page’s URL and judges how well they agree.

The model is told to use visible evidence in every reason, and not to recommend rewrites, infer missing content or evaluate tone. These are its reading of the page, not a rule. Probeo checks that each answer has the expected shape, not that a given verdict is right.

What this does not cover

This is not the <link rel="canonical"> tag. Technical SEO checks that the tag is present and well formed; see canonical tags.

Each page is read on its own, so two pages that claim the same identity are not compared here. Probeo also doesn’t propose a new title, heading or URL.

Common questions

Is this the same as the canonical tag?

No. The canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the preferred copy of a page. Canonical identity is about whether the page’s own signals agree on what it is.

What does partial mean?

Some of the page’s signals agree and some point elsewhere. The reason names which ones, so it is the place to start.

How much weight should I give a verdict?

Treat it as a careful reading, not a measurement. Check the reason against the page before acting on it.
